Manu Parekh is one of India's most prominent contemporary artists. We find in his art what Parekh finds id India - struggle, chaos, and angst but within it all a kind of order. Manu Parekh is passionate about India Having traveled extensively, his work is inspired by the sights, smells, vitality, and pulsating rhythms of the country. Sensitive to the human experience, his canvases are filled with memories, friendships, intimate encounters, and organic forms. His work ranges from the thin lines of his sexually charged drawings symbolizing India's passionate intertwined human existence to the broad strokes of the raging Ganges at the "Ghats of Varanasi' - depicting the volatile socio-political climate of modern India
On view is a collection of the artist's recent paintings. The exhibition begins with poignant textured faces on Nepalese rice paper followed by brilliant abstractions of texture, form, and color. It culminates with his most recent work depicting a complex synthesis of the figurative and abstract. Using unique forms and compositions, each painting renders the complexities of modern life. Whether he is painting faces, landscapes, or pure organic forms, Parekh is always expressing the human drama that surrounds him.
Manu Parekh was born in 1939 in Ahmedabad, India and studied painting at the prestigious J.J. School of Art in Bombay. He has exhibited extensively throughout India, Singapore, and Europe. In 1991, he was awarded the Padmashree, the highest honor in art bestowed by the Indian government. The artist has received significant international attention with the recent auction of his paintings by Sotheby's and Christies. This show marks the artist's first solo exhibition in the United States.
