Conundrum features paintings, drawings, sculptures, and mixed media works by a selection of contemporary Indian artists. Each of the artists included in the exhibition is working within an aesthetic paradigm that explores various modifications and derivations of organic forms and constructs. Works included range from fabric wrapped tree roots, hybrid human/animal and animal/plant forms, and technically modified figurative images.
Aditya Pande was born in Lucknow in 1974 and graduated from the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad in 2001. Pande's mixed media works combine computer graphics with painting, drawing and collage. Computer generated drawings interact with cartoon-like characters and mythical beings to create hyper-imaginative paintings that subvert traditional processes. The artist lives and works in New Delhi
Anita Dube was born in Lucknow in 1958. In 1979, she received a BA in History at the University of Delhi. From 1979 to 1982, she studied art criticism at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India. Trained as an art historian, Dube's work ranges from photography to sculpture. Her recent work uses a variety of found objects to explore critical ideas that are visually compelling and at once, both personal and political. The artist lives and works in New Delhi.
Arunkumar H.G. was born in Karnataka, India in 1968 and received a BA and MA in Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda in 1989-1995. Arunkumar primarily works in sculptures composed of a variety of found materials, with the addition of some photographic work and wall reliefs. The works explore the concept of Land and all that it entails and elaborates upon: metaphors for the human and social bodies; questions of ownership and usage; the migration of rural populations to urban centers. The artist lives and works in New Delhi
Raqs Media Collective was formed in 1992 in New Delhi by independent new media practitioners Monica Narula, Jeebesh Bagchi and Shuddhabrata Sengupta. All three members studied at the Mass Communications Research Centre at the Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi. In 2001, they founded SARAI, a reseach center, at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). Raqs Media Collective is based in Delhi, India.
Mithu Sen was born in West Bengal in 1971. She received her BFA and MFA in painting from Kala Bhavan at Santiniketan, and later, completed a postgraduate program at the Glasgow School of Art in the UK. In her drawings, collages, paintings, video works, found objects and installations, Sen explores the permutations of identity politics and the vagaries of self-perception. Anthropomorphic, anatomical and animist forms mingle with flora and fauna and other hybrid objects to create provocative and witty portraits. The artist lives and works in New Delhi
Suhasini Kejriwal was born in Kolkata in 1973. She received a BFA at the Parsons School of Design in New York in 1998 and an MFA at Goldsmiths College in London in 2006. Kejriwal is known for her fantastic and elaborate paintings depicting natural vegetation and anatomical forms. Lush and dense landscapes upon closer examination reveal tropical flora fauna, insects, human organs and other anatomical forms. The artist lives and works in Kolkata.
