Jayanta Roy " B-SWARGA"
November19th to January 3rd, 2010

Bose Pacia Kolkata is pleased to announce "B-SWARGA", the solo exhibition of new works by Kolkata based artist Jayanta Roy.

Trained as a sculptor, Jayanta Roy has concentrated primarily on painting in recent years. His canvas works are characterized by deceptively simple compositions, often hiding multiple small images within larger images, as a visual puzzle. His subjects are perception and recognition, investigated through signs and symbols, often with wit and irony. Roy's color palette is similarly reductive and restrained, in both style and content his paintings achieve their greatest pleasures through a stark limitation of means. For his solo show at Bose Pacia Kolkata, he has extended his personal vocabulary to include three new sculptures which complement the conundrums he proposes in his paintings. Roy's art extends the semiotic Surrealism of Rene Magritte, the graphic Pop of Andy Warhol, and the tongue-in-cheek Conceptualism of John Baldessari into a portrait of the artist as a young man living in India today.

A short excerpt from the essay written by Professor Sunanda Sanyal for the exhibition catalog further elaborates on Roy's accomplishments:

"…for the apparent superficiality of Jayanta's work is indeed part of its content. But if one is then initiated into its aesthetic, one discovers that its drama is more cerebral than retinal. The deception isn't a frivolous trick designed simply to dupe the viewer, but hides a complex dialectic between fiction and reality, between meditation and mediation, presented through an artifice that has always been fundamental to art. Through a game of simultaneous exposure and concealment, Roy's work asks many old questions in a contemporary language. And in so doing, it claims a niche in the legacy of similar practices in recent art. A very brief survey of that history, therefore, is crucial to any critical look at Jayanta Roy's images."
