Shuddhabrata Sengupta,
"Like possibly several other children growing up in the kind of lower-middle class metropolitan households that attempted to reconcile their aspirations towards culture with their frugal habits in the 1970s and1980s in Delhi, my first introduction to the art of our time was the framed print of a Husain painting. We had no television. And my parents had no gods. The only icons in our modest house were two framed pictures – an inexpensive N.S. Bendre, (Lalit Kala Akademi) print of a few women at a well and the reproduction of a Husain painting, possibly detached lovingly and carefully from an Air India calendar, possibly featuring the kind of goddess image that incensed the zealots who made it impossible for M. F. Husain to live out his final years in India."

Aakash Nihalani, Overlap, at Bose Pacia, in Dumbo Three years ago, Nihalani caught the attention of street art gazers in New York with his illicitly-installed geometric abstractions constructed entirely out of brightly-colored tape. Since then, he has steadily moved toward gallery work, where he produces sculptures made of metal, cardboard and tape that recreate his isometric and polygonal shapes in three dimensions—one of which pays (inexpensive) tribute to Jeff Koons’ famous balloon dog. Opens on Thursday, in Brooklyn.

Three Indian galleries participate in Miami art fair
Riddhi Doshi / DNA
Tuesday, December 8, 2009
Mumbai: Art Basel in Miami is considered one of the biggest art fairs in the world. This year, about 250 to 300 galleries participated in the fair and among these were three Indian galleries as well. DNA gets a look into what the Indian galleries offered at this coveted international art platform.
Nature Morte in association with gallery Bose Pacia showcased the works of Aditya Pande, Suhasini Kejriwal and Radhika Khimji. Peter Nagy says, "The section of the fair that we are in (Art Nova) dictates that we have to show only three artists that have something in common. All three artists are approaching painting from the perspective of new strategies and techniques, such as collage, digital media and installation."
While Chemould Prescott Road showcased the works of Pakistani artist Rashid Rana, Gallery Ske from Bangalore showed the works of artists Sudarshan Shetty and Avinash Veeraraghavan.
The aim of each gallery is to win more clients and get more exposure for their artists. Peter Nagy's Nature Morte has been participating in Art Basel, Miami, since 2006. He confirms, "The aim of participating in the fair is to find new clients for the artists we are representing, but it's also about meeting critics, curators and other galleries that might be interested in the artists we are working with and Indian art in general."
Rebecca Davis from Bose Pacia adds, "While talking to dealers and collectors in advance of the fair I can say that there is a noticeably more positive and active collective feeling about the art market. In walking through the installations you can see that galleries are bringing back some more challenging and risky artworks which are always a sign of increased confidence in the strength of the market. We look forward to the rest of the week when we will be able to have more conversations with new and existing collectors, critics, curators, and artists."
Aarti Shridhar from gallery Ske believes that this is a very prestigious fair to be a part of as well.
Leeza Ahmady in conversation with Bose Pacia gallery director Rebecca Davis. Find out about the gallery's exciting new space in Brooklyn, about their global reach, just what it takes to score a show at the place, and what it's like to be one of the only institutions to exclusively feature South Asian art. It's been a long road but, despite the economic downturn, Davis says Bose Pacia is thriving (30 minutes).

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We hope that everyone has had a relaxing and fulfilling summer. As the autumn approaches, change is in the air. As of September 1, 2009 Bose Pacia Gallery will relocate to a new space in Dumbo. (163 Plymouth Street between Jay and Pearl) Our move is based on new and compelling opportunities in the current commercial real estate market in New York City and the desire to keep our infrastructure in line with current market conditions. The Dumbo art scene is young, raw, and full of energy and we hope to produce many exciting projects, exhibitions, and events in our new space in the years to come. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you on the other side of the bridge!
Best wishes,
All of us at Bose Pacia / Nature Morte

The Neuroscience of Language and Certainty
3pm
Kenneth Perrine (Clinical Neuropyschologist, New York Presbyterian Hospital)
Arani Bose (Gallerist, Director of Stroke Research, Lenox Hill Hospital)
Dr. Perrine will discuss language and certainty, weaving together the questions posed by philosophers from Western (e.g., Wittgenstein, Bateson) and Eastern (Mahayana Buddhism, Taoism) traditions regarding language and subjectivity, with his research findings from performing the Wada test in which a sedative is injected into one hemisphere of the brain at a time. The effect is to shut down all functions in that hemisphere in order to evaluate the capabilities of the other, "awake" hemisphere. During this period of anesthesia he probes the neural mechanisms of memory, language and thinking in each hemisphere separately. He also performs Cortical Stimulation during awake neurosurgery to localize language and other cognitive processes by selectively disabling small (1 cm) cortical areas during cognitive testing. These procedures allow testing of hypotheses relating the neural bases of language, certainty, self-awareness and other mental functions to the questions posed by philosophers for millennia.

Rewiring the Soul: Technologies of the Truth
3pm
Lawrence Liang (Founding Member, Alternative Law Forum, Bangalore)
Truth technologies at the service of law from the Lie Detector to Narco-Analysis have made a sudden reappearance in the world after 9/11. In the Indian context, high profile cases including Abu Salem and Telgi's have centered on highly performative extractions of the truth, which are often televised on television. This paper attempts to provide a philosophical and cultural history of technologies of lie detection. It looks at the ways in which truth and lies were rendered technologically accessible, and how the body simultaneously becomes the archive of the soul and in turn produces a new regime of physiological truth. Popular discourse on crime and detection are vital to the legitimacy of these technologies of truth, and in many ways lie detectors were legitimized through popular culture before the found acceptance in law. This paper will locate the re-emergence of lie detectors within the dynamics of secrets and lies in the hyper mediatised world that we live in.

We are seeing things that were 25 standard deviations moves, several days in a row". This was the comment that David Viniar, CFO of Goldman Sachs offered as his explanation for the crisis. In other words, bad luck– an awful lot of it– has brought the world to the edge of a recession.. How accurate is this statement, and what made Viniar, one of the central players in the financial system believe this to be true? Guess and Check is Valid Math
3 pm
Christopher Perkins(Researcher; STAR Detector, Brookhaven National Laboratory, NY)
The basic problem of looking for the unknown leads to questions regarding where to look and what to look for. New discoveries in the field of physics are based on previous discoveries but the problem remains of which leads to follow and which to abandon. Even once an avenue for further research is chosen, the scientists involved must design an experiment and decide whether or not this experiment is capable of finding what they are looking for, even before they know what they will find. All that can be done is to choose a subset of the parameter space that offers the possibility of new discovery. We will lead a discussion on the process that precedes the reporting of scientific results and how scientists believe an avenue of research is valid.
